Thank you for your interest in FictionMagazines.com. We are the only short fiction publishing company that produces a monthly magazine in each genre, and we are the only company to offer royalty compensation for short fiction. We hope you see the benefit of publishing with us.

We ask that if this is your first time submitting work to FictionMagazines.com, that you send only one submission of your writing to us. That includes all of our publications. We want your absolute best work.

Rights

We want one month exclusivity for your story, as well as first publishing rights. So when your story runs in one of the magazines, from when the day the issue comes out for one month it cannot be up anywhere else online. After that one month exclusive period, you can republish the story elsewhere to publications that accept previously published work.

Previously published work not accepted.

Story Selection

Stories are voted on by a peer committee of volunteer writers and readers known as curators. Editors make the final call using feedback from curators. Generally, our reading time is about one month, but it can be stretched up to six months if the magazine is highly competitive.

Compensation

Writers who contribute a piece of writing are entitled to a lifetime royalty on individual issues sales. The participating writers for each issue split 50% of individual issue sales revenue. So a month from the day the story is released, until the end of time, our system will track sales of issues your work is in and have an account for you which will pay out automatically as soon as the total amount is $25.

Circulation

The magazines are up for subscription sale through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and FictionMagazines.com. Individual issues are sold everywhere ebooks are sold.

Formatting

Submissions that do not follow the following guidelines will be declined immediately. The perfect submission has:

  • Word count in the top right.
  • No manual returns within paragraphs (allow word processor to format lines).
  • Title centered on the page with only name (or pen name) underneath ("by" is unnecessary).
  • No special text characters.
  • 15 point standard serif font (Times new roman, Courier, Cambria, etc.).
  • Single spaced paragraphs. Use only double returns or three stars (* * *) for scene changes.
  • .RTF, .DOC, or .DOCX format.

Thank you for choosing FictionMagazines.com!

Please select the magazine below that best fits the genre of fiction you intend to submit. We can move submissions between categories, so we will find the best home for your work.

  • eFiction

eFiction is looking for a modern evolution of literary fiction. We want stories that hook right from the first sentence and don't let go until the impactful climax a few thousand words later.

Stories should be titled to attract a reader's interest; not to describe the story. The hook should pull the reader straight in to the action and/or drama. The climax should have emotional relevance. We want goose-bump triggering impact.

Every story can find a place in our issues, though not always on the first try. Give us a shot. The worst that could happen is that you get some solid feedback from the staff. Please follow submission guidelines. No first drafts.

No poetry accepted by eFiction. Other magazines accept poetry.

    Minimum word count: 2500 words
Accepted Document Types: doc, docx, txt, rtf

  • FIVE Poetry Magazine

FIVE Poetry Magazine is a showcase of poets as packages of poems. Each month, five poets are chosen to display their talents as a package deal, not as a one-poem flash.

We are open to every kind of poetry. Free verse, strict meter, postmodern, romantic, and anything else the poet is into. The limitations are set by the writer's intent. Nothing more.

    Submission Guidelines
When you submit your work, we accept or reject of all of the poems submitted in that submission. With your selection of 3-5 poems, please include a cover letter with your name, email address, titles of poems included, and a 100-word biography. Poems should not exceed 10 pages total. We do accept simultaneous submissions, but please inform the magazine immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Work should be submitted to Fiction Magazines' Submittable. Be sure to format your poems the way you would like them to appear in the magazine. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Hannah at hannah@fictionmagazines.com.

The reading period will usually take about three months. Please do not query about your submission until six months have passed.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: Haikus will no longer be acceptable as a single poem or as a block of poems. You may use haiku as a form, but not as the only form of poetry in your submission. If you have any questions, email the editor for clarification.

    Compensation
In addition to a copy of the issue your work appears in, poets who contribute a piece of writing are entitled to a lifetime royalty on individual issues sales. The participating writers for each issue split 50% of individual issue sales revenue. A month from the day the issue is released, until the end of time, our system will track sales of issues your poems are in and have an account for you which will pay out automatically as soon as the total amount is $25. A royalty agreement will be included with your acceptance letter.

  • Under the Bed

Our goal is to give readers horror stories that are fresh, tightly written, and most of all, scary.  Reading with your back to the wall, occasionally getting up to check all the locks, hiding under the blankets scary.  If you have a wonderful story that isn't scary, there are plenty of eFiction imprints who might love it.  Do check them out.

In addition to being very, very scary, your submission should be ready for publication.  This means no typos, no misspellings, no forgetting the shift key or basic punctuation rules.  Stories will be edited, but it will behoove you to use beta readers, have a helpful friend look it over, and read it out loud to catch any lingering errors.  Editors can be surly, and easily correctable errors only enrage us further.

    Rights:

We want one month exclusivity for your story, as well as first publishing rights. After that one month exclusive period, you can republish the story elsewhere to publications that accept previously published work.

    Story Selection:

Stories are voted on by a peer committee of volunteer writers and readers known as curators. Editors make the final call using feedback from curators. If you'd like feedback as to why your story was rejected, feel free to inquire...politely! Warning: hilariously overwrought complaints may find their way into the "Letters to the Editor" section of the mag.

    Apply to join curator team.

    Compensation:

Fiction contributors are entitled to a lifetime royalty on individual issues sales. The participating writers for each issue split 50% of individual issue sales revenue (10% of individual sales revenue to each author). One month from the release date, until the end of time, our system will track sales and will pay out automatically as soon as the total amount is $25. Submitting to us is an indication that you agree to and accept these terms.

Please follow all submission guidelines or risk being rejected, unread.

    Guidelines for Submission:

--We accept short stories of up to 9,999 words.

--Novel excerpts are acceptable, but must be a self-contained story.

--Micro and Flash Fiction are acceptable, as is Poetry.

--Reprints are acceptable under certain circumstances, provided the rights have reverted back to you. Please query for details.

--Simultaneous submissions okay.  Please withdraw your story immediately if it is accepted elsewhere.

--If you'd like to have a regular feature in our mag, pitch us!  Movies, Games, Music, Literature, Art, Interviews, Opinion Pieces--it's all welcome, and we're all ears.

Art:  Our Featured Artists provide our cover art, as well as much of the art you see inside the mag.  Submit a piece for our cover, and if we like it we may feature you as our Artist of the Month.  We'll feature various pieces inside the mag, along with an interview.  It's a great opportunity to show off your work and to be on a magazine cover.

    All submissions

Standard manuscript format: 12pt text.  Times, Courier, or Times New Roman, double spaced, italics--not underlining, standard margins, two-spaces after ending punctuation.  No page breaks, header/footer, or right-justified text.  Do not change text color or add graphics to your story.

Please include a biography (in 3rd person) and a two-sentence synopsis in your cover letter.  If there's a twist ending, make sure we know about it.  Bios should be roughly 200 words and include a list of publishing credits. You may also include one link to share with readers.  Your professional website or blog is best, but social media profiles will also be permitted.  An author photo is welcome but not required.

Please allow up to 16 weeks for a response.  You may track your submission on Submittable. If your piece is rejected, we offer you the option to consult beta readers and seek help with revisions in our online workshops, which are free to eFiction and FictionMagazine.com members.

We do not accept submissions as email attachments, nor will we go to a website to view or read your work. If you are having difficulties with our submissions form, please contact us for alternative submission methods.  In fact, feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

We're looking forward to your scariest submissions!
